2011 census creates 35,000 temp jobs

05 November 2010
A massive 35,000 contract jobs have been created to help carry out the next census in the UK.

The census is a count of all people and households in the UK which is carried out every ten years. The next census will take place on 27 March 2011. The Office for National Statistics have launched their national recruitment campaign to fill a range of full and part-time positions for the census.

In England and Wales, 35,000 people will be needed to fill roles which include that of coordinators and collectors, whilst a further 6,000 jobs are being created in Scotland, with another 2,000 in Northern Ireland.

For this national scale project, they will work within the local community and engage with people and organisations. Their help and support will be tremendously valued to ensure everyone in the UK is able to complete and return their questionnaire.

Glen Watson, director of the ONS told The Sun: "The 2011 census is less than six months away. We need to give people help and support to complete and return the census questionnaire and this means recruiting the right people for this important nationwide project."
"The census is not just about counting people - the information it provides is needed to plan vital services like schools, hospitals, housing, roads and emergency services," he added.
