Demand for IT jobs 'going strong'

17 November 2011
Demand for people in IT jobs continues to grow steadily, according to the Report on Jobs.

Compiled by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the trend is quite surprising considering the wider jobs market saw its first decline in over two years.

The number of vacancies for permanent jobs in the IT sector reached its highest peak in October, the industry saw the highest growth of any sector, reaching 57.2 on the report's index. A score of 50 or above marks growth.

"It is striking that, even at a time when the UK economy as a whole appears to be wobbling, demand for qualified IT professionals remains healthy," commented REC Technology chair Jeff Brooks.

He added that the future jobs market will focus on technical, highly-skilled areas like IT.

"The current tremors in the job market only seem to be accelerating this trend," Mr Brooks observed.

A decline in job vacancies last month was largely put down to cautious employers regarding the economic outlook.
