First impressions count at interviews

13 October 2010
According to an HR consultancy organisation’s survey published by HR Magazine, most employers would avoid firing candidates with poor personal hygiene (68%), negative body language or bad grammar (64%). To obtain their dream jobs, applicants should show an image of cleanliness and perfect grammar skills.

Some 56% of the surveyed employers revealed that a candidate's dress sense could have a negative impact on the recruitment decision and a further 59% said that poor grammar would make an applicant unemployable. Interestingly, around 10% said that they would avoid hiring if candidates had a 'poor handshake'. First impressions are therefore of essence, and candidates should always make a special effort when preparing for an interview.
