Government must 'tackle unemployment'

19 November 2009
Safeguarding jobs and tackling unemployment must remain the government's main priority, according to an industry trade body.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) suggested that it is vital for the UK's politicians to build a skills policy that prepares the country for a reversal in economic fortunes.

Responding to the legislative measures outlined in the annual Queen's speech, the body also claimed that efforts to report the gender pay differences of employees must be added proportionately and effectively.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, urged the government to outline their job creation objectives.

He said: "If we want to make a real difference for jobseekers on the ground, we need to look at new ways of providing support and building effective bridges into the world of work."

The Queen's speech also included a promise by prime minister Gordon Brown to allocate more capital to ease the impact of the recession on the young unemployed.
