How do UK workers commute to their jobs ?

31 August 2010
Employed people in the UK travel an average of 25 minutes to and from their jobs each day, Regus has recently published a survey showing that UK based employees spend approximately 25 minutes to travel to their workplace and back.

Another report from HR Magazine stipulates that less than 10% of employees surveyed live close enough to have the option of commuting to their jobs by walking or cycling. The report also shows that only 27% of workers surveyed use public transport to get to work each day.

The report also mentions that most commuters (64%) drive to and from work. An explanation of this figure could be that the majority of workers travel more than 90 minutes each day to get to their workplace.

The Regus survey also reveals that 20% of commuters travel more than 3 hours every day with only 1 in 5 of those using public transport.
If we look at results from other countries, the UK seems to be far behind in regards to cycling initiatives for journeys to and from work, whereas The Netherlands, seem to have the highest percentage with 8% of workers cycling to and from work.

However, car usage in the UK is still less popular than in countries like the USA (85%) or South Africa (83%) where  workers use their car for their journeys to work, although Japan registers only 23% of workers who use their car. This is particularly due to a great transport network and the majority of the population living in urban areas.

Randstad Technologies is an IT recruitment consultancy specialising in UK based IT jobs and we are partnering with Cyclescheme to administer Tax-free Bikes for Work. The tax exemption applies on bicycles and safety equipment, usually up to a limit of £1000, as long as the bicycles are used mainly for journeys made by you between your home and place of work.
