Qualifications remain a key concern for jobseekers

19 October 2010
Research from the Home Learning College has revealed that around 30% of jobseekers are being restricted by limited formal Qualifications. According to a recent People Management survey conducted with almost 4,000 jobseekers in the UK, 32% of those that are unemployed and looking for jobs felt that having a lack of qualifications limited their chances of securing a job. This is almost equivalent to 28% of those that are frustrated with their current situation as opposed to 62% of those that are certain about finding a new job within the next 6 weeks.

However although more than 54% of jobseekers are taking into consideration further studies to increase their chances in the job search, Recruiter reports that the same survey indicates that many job seekers are disappointed with the benefits of further education. Just over 21% of jobseekers with a degree said that it did not benefit their career.

"Ambitious jobseekers are recognising that targeted vocational qualifications can add real value to their CV, helping to underpin and expand existing skills and experience," said Dave Snow, academic director at the Home Learning College.

According to People Management, the survey also revealed that job seekers are facing tough competition for each job, alongside other related issues including limited jobs in their field of work and not having enough experience to remain competitive. It also revealed the challenging situation of a jobs market where many are criticised for being too specialised in a niche area, whilst others have the opposite problem of not having enough specialist knowledge.
