UK employment 'on road to recovery'

04 November 2009
The number of permanent employment positions created in the UK last month increased to its highest level in two years, a new study has discovered.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Report on Jobs – compiled alongside KPMG - revealed that the overall number of vacancies in the country's jobs market rose for the first time in 17 months in October.

In addition, the report disclosed that the number of temporary jobs rose at its fastest pace in 16 months, while employees on short-term placements also witnessed their pay fall at its slowest rate for a year.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, explained that confidence is returning to the UK's flexible labour market.

He said: "These figures show that the UK jobs market is on the road to recovery, with signs of improvement for the third month in a row."

Last month, prime minister Gordon Brown was urged by the TUC to prioritise job creation at a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad and Tobago.
