Unemployment fell in the second quarter of 2010

11 October 2010
2010 has seen an increased recruitment activity in the UK. However, the overall level of unemployment has decreased by just 8,000 people between April and May 2010.
The Financial Times reported that the number of unemployed people in the UK is now at 2.67 million which means that it dropped from 7.9% to 7.8%.

BBC reported that the latest figures from the ONS show that unemployment has decreased far slower than previously expected.

The recruitment and the overall employment industry had predicted a decrease of about 40,000 due to higher staffing activity from the private sector, driven by the economic growth seen at the end of last year. This drop does not mean that unemployment has increased, according to the ONS. However, figures show that the number of people out of work and claiming unemployment benefit has increased by 2,300 to 1.47 million people. According to Employment Minister, Chris Gayling this rise has clarified the necessity to rethink the benefits system, as new jobs do not seem to be filled by benefit claimants.
